What is the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana scheme?

Under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana ( PMAY ) scheme, the government provides subsidies for availing loans for the purchase, construction, development, or improvement of houses. The scheme targets Economically Vulnerable (EWS), Low Income (LIG), and Middle Income (MIG) members.

This project was launched with the goal of completing 2.7 billion houses by 2022. 1.8 billion houses have been built so far. So, we are close to 67% of our goal. This scheme is integrated with other government schemes to ensure housing access to toilets, electricity, and drinking water.

Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) is the central government’s flagship program to promote home ownership in the country. It was launched in June 2015 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi with a mission to achieve “Housing for All” by 2022. It is implemented by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development (MoHUA). The scheme is divided into two parts: Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana Urban or PMAY-U and Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana Rural or PMAY-R. Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana completes 7 years

Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana started on 25th June 2015 and will end on September 30, 2022f. According to reports, on the occasion of the seventh anniversary of this project, the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development organized an event under the chairmanship of Secretary General Manoj Joshi. An e-book describing the results of this program was also published during this ceremony.

Facilities Provided Under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana scheme

• The purpose of this mission is to address the housing needs of the urban poor, including slum dwellers. A slum is a community of at least 300 people or about 60 to 70 households in an unsanitary environment, usually with inadequate infrastructure, lack of adequate sanitation and drinking water facilities, and poor construction.
• Beneficiaries include Economically Weaker Sections (EWS), Low Income Groups (LIG), and Middle-Income Groups (MIG). Maximum annual income is INR 300,000 for EWS, INR 30,000 to INR 60,000 for LIG and INR 6 + -180,000 for MIG. The EWS category of beneficiaries is eligible for support in all four verticals of the mission, while the LIG and MIG categories are eligible only under the Credit Financial Assistance Scheme (CLSS) component.
• To be identified as an EWS or LIG beneficiary under the scheme, individual loan applicants submit a certificate or affidavit as proof of income.
• The beneficiary family consists of a husband, wife, unmarried son, and/or unmarried daughter.
• The beneficiary family should not have a pakka house in his name or in his surname in any part of India to be eligible for central assistance under this mission.
• The ownership of the house is provided in the name or joint name of the female member.
•  Preference will also be given to persons with disabilities, senior citizens, SC, ST, OBC, minorities, single women, trans, and other vulnerable and vulnerable sections of society.
• All eligible beneficiaries under all components of the scheme shall have an Aadhaar/Aadhaar virtual ID which shall be merged with the beneficiary details.
• The State/UT, at its discretion, may fix a cut-off date on which a beneficiary must be a resident of its metropolitan area to be eligible for the benefits of the scheme.
•  The 10-year growth rate of slums is predicted to be 34%, which reaches 18 million households in slums.
•  Two million non-slum urban poor households are proposed to be targeted for this mission. So the total housing shortage that is expected to be solved through the new mission is 20 million units.
• This mission covers the entire urban area which includes the statutory city of Notified Planning.
